On Saturday, I was with my mom walking around on some land that I bought near my family in Montcalm County, MI when I saw something that looked like a small, very dark deer dart across a two-track in front of me.
I assumed it was a dog, and thought someone might be out hunting in one of the adjoining fields. A few minutes later, as I reached a high point on the land, I could see two dogs running towards me from a few thousand yards away. Figuring I would be attacked (getting chased by semi-wild dogs isn't that uncommon in the area), I started quickly walking towards the car. As we got close, it became clear that these were very domesticated dogs - with no tags, very wet, and very skinny.

As they got even closer, it became
clear that they had been sprayed by a skunk. Not wanting them to run
into the road, I opened the car door. Both lept in and immediately
fell asleep. We drove around to the few homes (and one potential meth
lab) in the area knocking on doors, and were told that they had been in
the area for at least a week. We took them to the local vet, who found
no microchip and no matching dogs reported missing. We then found a
groomer willing to take in the very stinky dogs, and give them a bath
and a haircut (the Spaniel was very matted and covered in burrs). After
a lot of phone calls, we've come to the conclusion that they were
likely dumped - unfortunately not uncommon in the area.
So.. the dogs. We've given them tentative names, but they're pretty oblivious to them so far. Natasha is a 4-6 year old German shorthaired pointer. She appears to be a purebred, all liver with a docked tail. She doesn't appear to have been spayed - but will be as soon as she puts on enough weight. She is incredibly sweet, docile, and affectionate which is surprising given the various cuts and nicks she appears to have accrued in her time in the woods.
Cleveland (or Rufus... we haven't decided) appears to be a purebred English Springer Spaniel (liver and white, with a docked tail) between 1 and 3 years old. He is also very docile and affectionate, but seems a bit more rambunctious and playful.
They've been to the vet for an initial check and de-worming, and will be returning tomorrow for a more thorough check and vaccinations. They are also pretty amazingly well behaved. They have had no accidents, nor have they been destructive in any way (which is much better than any of the puppies we've fostered). They show no food or toy aggression, and have done well with my mom's giant German shepherd mixes (which can be pretty overwhelming).
They are available for adoption. I've had some interest in the Detroit office for one, but I would love it if they could go together. They sleep together every night, and really seem to comfort each other. Feel free to email or call if interested.
